Think Tank Europa contributes to mapping of digitalisation in Europe
Senior Adviser Jan Høst Schmidt has written a chapter on Denmark in a report from the Center for European Policy Analysis that analyses digital policy priorities in Denmark, France, Italy, and Poland
Main Findings
- Denmark is a digital pioneer. Compared with other EU countries, Denmark is a leader in broadband connectivity and internet penetration. Just over 90 per cent of Danes communicate digitally with the public sector.
- At the same time, Denmark likes to see, along with France and Germany, a strong regulation through the EU of major tech platforms.
- However, Denmark is skeptical of Brussels-led proposals for digital protectionism and generous tech subsidies.
- A vibrant freedom of expression tradition makes it wary of too strong of a crackdown on online speech
Content of the Report
Like all EU legislation, the EU's recently adopted legislation to regulate, among other things, the major tech platforms, the Digital Single Act and the Digital Market Act, constitute, compromises between positions adopted by the EU member states. The four countries examined in this report - France, Italy, Denmark and Poland - provide a good picture of where Europe has a consensus on technology policy and where compromises are required. Each profile explores how the country handles the challenge of becoming digital, from its Internet infrastructure to its success in building online businesses. It also analyses each country's position on important technology policy issues.
