New Project on Food Crisis and Biosolutions

Think Tank EUROPA has received funding from the Novo Nordisk Foundation to foster debate on the EU's future food production. The project will run for three years.

With the project "Biosolutions 2030 - towards a paradigm shift in the EU's agricultural and food policy", Think Tank EUROPA, with support from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, will focus on the food crisis and its solutions.

Chief Analyst Ditte Brasso Sørensen states:

Climate change and the war in Ukraine have sharpened the political focus in the EU on finding solutions that reduce the trade-off between food security and green objectives.
It is important to have a debate in Denmark and Europe about exactly how the EU may ensure more sustainable food production and at the same time contribute to food security within and outside Europe. It is a task that I look forward to help carry out, and I'm grateful that the Novo Nordisk Foundation has chosen to support this project.

Senior Vice President for Biotech Claus Felby from the Novo Nordisk Foundation says:

If we want to be able to feed a growing world population and at the same time reduce climate change, we need to adopt new solutions. There are already many biological alternatives to the use of chemicals and fertilizers in our food production, but to get them into production takes a very long time, because the EU's legislation is not up to date. It is therefore necessary for us, both nationally and in the EU, to have a debate about what is needed, so that we can push for a development that may help promote the green transition.

The project runs over three years and will focus on the revision of the EU's GMO legislation and the role biosolutions can play in future food production. This will happen both through publications, public events and meetings.

The Think Tank EUROPA does not take collective positions. This publication only represent the views of their individual authors.
