The social dimension of the EU: Tough nuts to crack

Growing inequality and social differences in Europe are among the major concerns of EU-citizens. The European Commission and the Council have been criticized for a lack of concern about the social impact of their economic and budgetary policies. The new President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has announced that he would put the social dimension of the EU higher on the agenda. But how do we create a stronger social dimension to the European Union?

Professor Vandenbroucke is the main author of a recent report for the Friends of Europe High-Level Group on ‘Social Union’ on the social challenges faced by the EU and their possible solutions. Frank Vandenbroucke, who chaired this High-Level Group, will present its main conclusions at this seminar.

Program:

First half: Keynote lecture by Professor Frank Vandenbroucke, University of Leuven, former Deputy Prime Minister in Belgium and former Minister for Employment, Pensions and Social Affairs.
 
Second half: Dialogue between Frank Vandenbroucke and Professor Dorte Sindbjerg Martinsen, University of Copenhagen.

The seminar will be followed by a reception.
